Driving in Inyo County: the US 395 expressway and Death Valley roads

U.S. 395 is the main highway through Inyo County and a national truck route. Near Olancha and Cartago, Caltrans is converting about 12.6 miles of two-lane highway into a four-lane expressway. The new lanes sit on each side of a 100-foot dirt median. Traffic moved onto them between October 2024 and June 2025, according to the Olancha-Cartago project page (opens in a new tab). On the expressway, keep right except to pass. Check your mirrors early when trucks pull onto the highway from side roads.

Repaving is also planned through Independence. The Manzanar project (opens in a new tab) covers 44 lane miles of US 395, with a tentative start of May 11, 2026. From Olancha, CA 190 leads into Death Valley National Park. The park says its biggest danger is not heat but "the single car rollover" (NPS directions (opens in a new tab)). Its roads date to the 1930s, cell phones fail in most areas, and GPS often sends people the wrong way. Keep speeds low on curves, carry paper maps, and use a lower gear going downhill.
