Driving in Kings County: Kettleman City traffic and trucks on SR 41
State Route 41 is the key road at Kettleman City, where traffic heads to and from Interstate 5. New businesses have crowded the SR 41 and Bernard Drive intersection, and some southbound drivers have used the shoulder as a lane. Caltrans lists construction of a two-lane roundabout there from April 2026 to March 2027 (Kettleman Roundabout (opens in a new tab)). Practice multi-lane roundabouts before you drive this one. Pick your lane from the signs before entering, and yield to traffic already inside.
Between I-5 and the Kern County line, heavy truck traffic has worn out SR 41. The Reef City project (opens in a new tab) repaves this stretch and adds rumble strips, with work listed to wrap up in July 2026. Tule fog forms on many winter nights in the Central Valley, from late October through February, the National Weather Service (opens in a new tab) says. Its Sacramento office (opens in a new tab) notes that fog can make you feel slower than you are. If a rumble strip buzzes, steer gently back into your lane. In fog, use low beams, watch your speedometer, and give trucks extra room.
