Learning to drive in Laguna Niguel: a separated bikeway and 78 timed signals

In August 2024, Laguna Niguel added a separated bikeway (opens in a new tab) on both sides of Aliso Creek Road. It runs from La Paz Road to Alicia Parkway. About 100 students ride to the nearby middle school there, most of them on e-bikes. The pilot uses posts, striped buffers and green paint where bikes and cars cross paths. Green paint marks a conflict zone. Slow down there, look for riders, and let them pass before you turn.

The city's Public Works team keeps 78 traffic signals synchronized (opens in a new tab) so drivers stop less often. Timed routes include Crown Valley Parkway, Alicia Parkway and La Paz Road. Niguel Road, Pacific Park Drive and Moulton Parkway with Golden Lantern are timed too. Fewer stops also mean less idling and lower emissions. Drive at the posted limit, and the next light is more likely to be green. Speeding up only puts you at the next red sooner.
