Learning to drive in San Juan Capistrano: Ortega Highway and creek trail detours

State Route 74, the Ortega Highway, links San Juan Capistrano with Riverside County (Caltrans project page (opens in a new tab)). Caltrans plans to widen it from two lanes to four, from Calle Entradero to just past the county line. The plan adds a painted median, and part of the area gets 8-foot shoulders for bike lanes. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. Until then, expect heavy peak-hour delays, and keep a three-second gap behind the car ahead.

A new rail bridge over San Juan Creek closed the bikeway from I-5 to the creek trail (bridge project (opens in a new tab)). The closure is planned from April 2024 through December 2026, with a bike detour on Camino Capistrano and Del Obispo Street. The city also set summer 2026 for repaving a section of Del Obispo Street that starts at Camino Capistrano (capital projects (opens in a new tab)). That puts more cyclists on busy streets. Give them room, and check your mirror before you open a door or turn right.
