Learning to drive in Dana Point: student parking rules and long signal cycles
Since September 1999, Dana Point has had a Preferential Parking District around Dana Hills High School (traffic engineering (opens in a new tab)). It keeps students from parking on nearby residential streets. The district has grown several times as student parking spread to other blocks. To make up for it, the city added parking on Golden Lantern and Stonehill Drive. Cars without a valid permit during posted hours get tickets, so read the curb signs before you park near campus.
Dana Point times its signals together on four main roads, including Pacific Coast Highway and Del Obispo. A side street may wait through a long cycle, even when the main road looks empty. In summer, the free Dana Point Trolley runs every 15 minutes from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend (transportation (opens in a new tab)). Its stops serve beaches, parks and shopping areas. Wait for your green on a side street, and give a stopped trolley room.
