Driving in Lake County: Route 29 between the Clear Lake towns
State Route 29 ties together Lake County towns like Lakeport, Kelseyville, Lower Lake and Middletown. It also carries cars and trucks between U.S. 101 and Interstate 5. In 2023, Caltrans finished a three-mile, four-lane expressway (opens in a new tab) from near Route 175 to Konocti Rock Company Road. The full Konocti Corridor (opens in a new tab) plan covers eight miles, but the other two segments still need funding. So drivers move from four lanes back to two. Watch for lane-drop signs, merge early and smoothly, and never pass where the center line is solid yellow.
In Middletown, Route 29 is also the town's main street. Caltrans plans safety work in Middletown (opens in a new tab) that adds sidewalks, lighting, bike lanes and flashing crosswalk beacons between Callayomi and Young streets. It also adds a two-way center turn lane and a left-turn lane at Lake Street. Caltrans schedules construction from October 2027 to April 2029. Learn the center turn lane rule now. Use it only to start or finish a left turn, never to pass, and always stop for people in a crosswalk.
