Driving in Lassen County: run-off-road fixes and fault-line pavement
State Route 36 west of Susanville has a stretch where cars ran off the road often enough to need a safety fix. Caltrans began its Devil's Corral safety project (opens in a new tab), about 9 miles west of Susanville, after a run-off-the-road monitoring program flagged the area. The work adds 8-foot shoulders, guardrail, and rumble strips along the edge and center line. Crews will also clear trees so more sun reaches the pavement. Caltrans scheduled construction to resume in spring 2026. If your tires hit a rumble strip, ease back into your lane gently instead of jerking the wheel.
Also on Route 36, just east of Fredonyer Summit, seismic activity has damaged the road. In February 2025, Caltrans reported repairs over several fault lines (opens in a new tab) with one-way control day and night. Pilot cars led drivers through at no more than 15 mph where pavement was removed. Caltrans also lists 2026 repaving on State Route 139 north of Susanville (opens in a new tab). Practice following a pilot car. Stay close enough to see it, hold a steady low speed, and never pass in the line.
