Learning to drive in Lompoc: Ocean Avenue is Highway 246

In Lompoc, West Ocean Avenue is also Highway 246, so Caltrans crews work on a busy city street (Caltrans news release (opens in a new tab)). For October 6 to 8, 2026, Caltrans scheduled a westbound lane closure from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Crews were to take down a dead Canary Island pine near U and T streets. Message and direction signs warn drivers before the work area. Allow extra time, move over well before the closed lane, and slow down for crews.

Caltrans also plans to replace the Robinson Bridge, which carries Route 246 over the Santa Ynez River (Caltrans project page (opens in a new tab)). It was built in 1939, it is rated scour critical, and a 100-year flood would overtop it. Its replacement would give walkers and cyclists a sidewalk, and maybe a shared path too. Construction is planned from April 2030 to August 2034. Never drive onto a flooded road or bridge, and turn around to find another route.
