Learning to drive in Santa Maria: the US 101 corridor and brighter crosswalks

US 101 is Santa Maria's main freeway north toward San Luis Obispo County. A Caltrans corridor plan (opens in a new tab) studied about 37 miles of it, from State Route 135 in Santa Maria to SR 58. It weighed safety, congestion, accessibility and goods movement. The City of Santa Maria was one of the planning partners. Freight trucks share this corridor, so pass them quickly and fully, and do not ride alongside their trailers.

In town, Santa Maria has made crosswalks easier to see. A citywide pedestrian safety project (opens in a new tab) gave 74 crosswalks high-visibility striping, new signs and ramp upgrades. One new crosswalk sits where Miller Street meets Oak Street, close to the Santa Maria Transit Center. The work also added about 152 curb ramp improvements and pads for 37 bus stops. Slow down when you see the wide white bars of a crosswalk, and stop for anyone waiting to cross.
