Learning to drive in San Luis Obispo: high-injury streets and a safer Grand Avenue
In San Luis Obispo, most serious crashes happen on a few busy streets. The city's Vision Zero page (opens in a new tab) says 80 percent of fatal and severe injury crashes occur on 11 percent of its roads. That network includes Higuera Street, Broad Street, Foothill Boulevard and Los Osos Valley Road. Multi-lane streets posted at 40 mph or more account for 56 percent of fatal crashes. On these roads, hold your speed at or below the limit. Scan crosswalks and bike lanes at every intersection.
Grand Avenue is getting a safety redesign. In early 2025, the city tried low-cost pilot safety changes (opens in a new tab) between Slack Street and Monterey Street after crashes rose there. Results from that pilot will shape a full paving project, targeted for construction in summer or fall 2027. Quick-build changes can move lane lines and add posts or painted curbs. Drive a changed street slowly the first few times. Follow the new markings, and yield to anyone crossing.
