Learning to drive in Atascadero: a calmer El Camino Real and deer on city streets

Atascadero's ECR Project covers 0.6 miles of El Camino Real downtown, from Highway 41 to Rosario Avenue (city news release (opens in a new tab)). The plan limits traffic to one lane in each direction and adds crosswalks that are easier to see. It also calls for a full overhead pedestrian signal at East Mall, more than 100 free parking spaces and loading zones. Construction was expected to last through summer 2025. Downtown, watch for cars backing out of spaces, and yield to people in the crosswalks.

Atascadero Public Works removes large dead wild animals, such as deer, from city streets (city FAQ (opens in a new tab)). The city also uses mid-block crosswalks sparingly (crosswalk FAQ (opens in a new tab)). It says they can give walkers a false sense of safety on faster roads with more than two lanes. Most crosswalks are placed at signals or stop signs instead. At dawn and dusk, scan the roadsides for deer, and watch for walkers crossing away from corners.
