Driver's ed and DMV guide for Paso Robles, CA

For families in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County (population 31,525).

Teens in Paso Robles take the same 30-hour online driver education course as everywhere in California, then the permit test at a DMV office. The nearest DMV field office is the Paso Robles office at 841 Park Street, Paso Robles, about 1.2 miles in a straight line from Paso Robles's public high schools.

Where do Paso Robles teens take the permit and drive tests?

The Coalinga office is open only part of the week, so check the days before you go. None of California's 162 permit-testing DMV offices lists weekend hours, so plan a school-day visit. Book an appointment on the DMV appointments page (opens in a new tab), and arrive well before 4:30 p.m.: knowledge tests are not given after that. What to bring is on our permit visit checklist.

Learning to drive in Paso Robles: plans for Union Road and State Route 46 East

At Union Road, State Route 46 East has a stop-controlled crossing where delays build up (Caltrans project page (opens in a new tab)). Caltrans and the city plan to carry Union Road over the highway on a new overcrossing. Two roundabouts would link the new road to local streets north and south of SR 46. Where Paso Robles Boulevard and Airport Road meet the highway, only right turns in and out would remain. Phase 1 construction is planned from fall 2027 to fall 2029. Until then, wait for a safe gap before you cross, and never rush a turn onto the highway.

County roads around Paso Robles were also hit by winter storms in 2023. Replacing the Creston Road bridge (opens in a new tab) over Quail Creek called for a full closure from June 1 to September 4, 2026. On Chimney Rock Road, a bridge detour (opens in a new tab) has a strict 15-mph limit and temporary signals. Its new two-lane bridge should be finished in winter 2026. Obey temporary signals, keep to detour limits, and stop fully on red even when no one is coming.
