Driving in Mariposa County: the SR 140 rockslide and Yosemite routes
State Route 140 carries Mariposa County traffic toward El Portal and Yosemite, and a rockslide still affects one section. Since the Ferguson slide, drivers have used a temporary bypass there. Caltrans plans a 675-foot rock shed to restore the full highway (Ferguson project (opens in a new tab)). Work is listed to begin in summer 2026 and last about five years. Drive the bypass with a parent first. Keep a slow, steady speed and follow every sign and flagger.
State Route 49 is the other key road, running through the town of Coulterville. Caltrans plans to repave about 43 lane miles of it, with completion targeted for spring 2032 (SR 49 project (opens in a new tab)). The Yosemite driving page (opens in a new tab) warns that GPS units can be wrong near the park. It adds that chains may be required from about October through April. When the road sign and your phone disagree, trust the sign. Carry chains in cold months and practice installing them on dry pavement first.
