Driving in Mendocino County: Route 1 slides and small-town main streets
On the Mendocino coast, parts of State Route 1 are slipping toward the sea. About 1.3 miles south of Westport, the highway crosses a large landslide roughly 250 feet above the shoreline. Caltrans lists emergency work at Westport (opens in a new tab) through December 2026, with 24/7 one-way traffic and waits up to 30 minutes. The Salmon Creek Bridge (opens in a new tab) has shoulders only one foot wide, and its replacement is set to begin in summer 2030. At a one-lane signal or flagger, stop at the line and wait your turn. On narrow bridges, slow down and watch for bicyclists.
Inland, U.S. 101 and State Route 128 become main streets in small towns. In Hopland, Caltrans posted a 25 mph limit during sidewalk and road work (opens in a new tab) and lists the project as finishing in November 2026. On Route 128, Caltrans plans to repave about 13 miles through the Boonville area starting in 2027. Bike lanes in Boonville (opens in a new tab) are expected to start construction in 2031. Practice these town stretches with a parent. Slow down early, watch for people stepping out between parked cars, and check your mirror for bikes before turning right.
