Learning to drive in Menlo Park: Willow Road bikeways and Caltrain crossings at street level

Between Bayfront Expressway and US 101, Willow Road is State Route 114 as it passes through Menlo Park. Caltrans repaved it in late 2022 and early 2023, adding high-visibility crossings and bike lane buffers. The city's Willow Road safety project (opens in a new tab) now plans protected bikeways from Bayfront Expressway to Chester Street. New crossings are planned at O'Brien Drive and Bay Road. Before turning across a bike lane on Willow, look over your shoulder and let any rider pass first.

Caltrain tracks cross Ravenswood, Oak Grove, Glenwood and Encinal avenues at street level. Menlo Park's grade separation plan (opens in a new tab) would separate the tracks from the road at the first three. Encinal Avenue would stay an at-grade crossing. The city is still arranging design and environmental work with Caltrain. Until anything is built, cars, bikes and trains share those crossings. Wait until the car ahead has fully cleared the tracks before you start across.
