Driving in San Mateo County: express lanes and the coastside

On US 101, San Mateo County drivers share the freeway with toll express lanes. The San Mateo 101 Express Lanes (opens in a new tab) were completed in March 2023 and cover 22 miles each way. They start at the Santa Clara County line and end at I-380 in South San Francisco. Buses, motorcycles and cars with three or more people ride free, while other drivers can pay a toll that changes with traffic. North of I-380, a managed-lane plan (opens in a new tab) lists construction for December 2028. Before using these lanes, practice reading the overhead signs and changing lanes only where the markings allow it.

On the coast side, Highway 1 runs beside the Pacific near Pescadero, and the bluff there is wearing away. Caltrans plans to shift 0.6 mile of the highway (opens in a new tab) near Pescadero Creek Road 30 to 40 feet inland. Storms and erosion have cracked the pavement there, and construction is targeted for fall 2028 to fall 2029. Between Moss Beach and Half Moon Bay, a 7.3-mile rehabilitation (opens in a new tab) adds buffered bike lanes and 47 striped crosswalks. Work there is listed to end in summer 2027. Coastside lessons should focus on people outside cars: scan crosswalks and beach parking areas, and give cyclists at least three feet.
