Learning to drive in Mission Viejo: a new HAWK signal and timed parkways

Mission Viejo is adding a HAWK signal at Olympiad Road and Lake Mission Viejo, near the Youth Athletic Park (capital projects (opens in a new tab)). HAWK stands for high-intensity activated crosswalk. Construction was set for spring 2026, funded mostly by an OCTA-run Measure M2 grant. Many new drivers have never met this kind of signal. Treat its lights like any signal: on solid red, stop and wait. On flashing red, stop, then go only when the crosswalk is clear.

The same list shows signal timing work with OCTA on Marguerite, Crown Valley and Santa Margarita parkways. That work continues through 2028. The northbound I-5 on-ramp from westbound Oso Parkway is being designed to widen from one lane to two. Mission Viejo's safety plan for local roads (opens in a new tab), done in 2021, covers drivers, cyclists and walkers. Hold a steady speed at the limit on timed parkways. Racing ahead only gets you to the next red sooner.
