Driving in Plumas County: Route 70 work zones and Lake Almanor shoulders
State Route 70 links Plumas County towns such as Quincy, Cromberg and Portola. Near Cromberg, Caltrans is rebuilding the highway to smooth its curves and widen the shoulders. The Cromberg project (opens in a new tab) brought 24/7 traffic control with delays of up to 25 minutes. Caltrans expects it to finish in fall 2026. Between the Greenville Wye and Quincy, very large loads now need a CHP escort (opens in a new tab) after a permit-load crash. When you see an escort or pilot car, slow down and move as far right as is safe.
Around Lake Almanor, State Route 89 near Canyon Dam is getting a rebuild. Caltrans is widening shoulders to at least four feet (opens in a new tab), or eight feet on one section. It is also adding a paved path for walkers and bikes. Work was set to resume in spring or summer 2026. Wider shoulders give a drifting driver room to recover, but people may walk or ride there too. Practice passing bicyclists with at least three feet of space, and wait behind them if oncoming traffic leaves no room.
