Learning to drive in Pomona: the SR 71 freeway and an Orange Grove quick-build
State Route 71 through Pomona has been turning from an expressway into a freeway. Caltrans' conversion project (opens in a new tab) covers 3.1 miles from Mission Boulevard to the San Bernardino County line and adds an HOV lane. Its listed schedule ran from spring 2021 through fall 2025. Several side-street intersections, including Old Pomona Road, were closed for good. Old turns may be gone, so check a current map first, and merge at the speed of traffic.
Pomona is also testing street changes with paint and flexible posts. The quick-build at Orange Grove and Park avenues (opens in a new tab) cuts Orange Grove Avenue from four lanes to two, from Garey to White. It adds buffered bike lanes and a protected intersection at Park Avenue, near Lincoln Elementary School. The city set construction to begin September 8, 2026, followed by six months of observation. When the striping and posts change, slow down, follow the new markings, and check for cyclists at each corner.
