Learning to drive in Porterville: a slower Plano Street and a rebuilt Main Street
Plano Street serves several school campuses and Porterville College, so it gets crowded before and after class. In January 2026, the City Council lowered the speed limit (opens in a new tab) there from 45 mph to 40 mph. It also approved a new multi-way stop at Plano Street and College Avenue. The city planned advance signs and pavement markings to help drivers adjust. Watch for new stop signs on routes you know well. Near schools, slow down more and expect students between cars.
Downtown, the city planned to rebuild Main Street (opens in a new tab) between Morton and Olive avenues in three phases. Phase one began in September 2023 with new underground lines, curbs and sidewalks. Crews kept to weekday hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to limit traffic trouble. Downtown work zones narrow the lanes and move crosswalks around. Slow down in cone zones, follow every sign, and expect people walking close to the curb.
