Learning to drive in Visalia: SR 198 interchanges and dense fog advisories

State Route 198 runs through Visalia as a freeway, and its interchanges keep changing. Caltrans and the city propose a new interchange at Road 148 (opens in a new tab) in eastern Visalia, with construction listed for completion in September 2035. Earlier, Caltrans targeted the Lovers Lane undercrossing, where ramp intersections backed up (opens in a new tab) as traffic grew. That project also planned to repave State Route 216 along Lovers Lane and Houston Avenue. On short freeway ramps, check traffic early and be ready to wait for a gap at the signal.

State Route 63 also passes through Visalia. In February 2026, Caltrans announced funding to repave SR 63 (opens in a new tab) from Mooney Boulevard to Avenue 326, with Complete Streets features. Fog is the other Visalia test. The National Weather Service issues a Dense Fog Advisory (opens in a new tab) when visibility often falls to a quarter mile or less. On those mornings, consider waiting. If you must drive, use low beams, slow down, and add extra following distance.
