Learning to drive in Salinas: closing the US 101 median gaps

South of Salinas, US 101 still has gaps in its median where drivers turn left across the highway. Caltrans plans to close all 11 median openings (opens in a new tab) between Airport Road and Chualar, ending left turns and U-turns there. Crashes at some of these crossings happen more often than the statewide average. Caltrans lists construction from about February or March 2027 to fall 2027. A broader South of Salinas corridor project (opens in a new tab) also plans interchange upgrades and fixes for unsignalized rail crossings. Until then, avoid crossing the median on a fast highway, and use an interchange instead.

Inside the city, Salinas is building safety into routine street work. The City Council adopted a Vision Zero policy (opens in a new tab) on February 11, 2020. It aims to end traffic deaths and severe injuries. The city folds safety upgrades into its pavement maintenance, which it calls Vision Zero Integrated into Maintenance. Expect new striping and crosswalk changes after a street is repaved. Read the fresh markings each time instead of driving by memory.
