Learning to drive in Watsonville: downtown crosswalks on SR 152 and Highway 1 repairs

Downtown Watsonville sits on State Route 152, and its crosswalks have a crash problem. Caltrans found a pattern of pedestrian collisions (opens in a new tab) at marked crosswalks there, involving both through and turning traffic. The project runs from near Freedom Boulevard to Beck Street. It adds curb bulb-outs, high-visibility ladder crosswalks and updated crossing signs. Work was scheduled to start in fall or winter 2026 and wrap up in spring 2029. When you turn at a downtown corner, check the crosswalk first, and wait until walkers clear your lane.

South of town, Highway 1 got its own repairs. From the Monterey County line northward, Caltrans restored damaged culverts (opens in a new tab), upgraded lighting and traffic counters, and added changeable message signs. That work was scheduled from May 2025 to June 2026. Watsonville itself approved Vision Zero (opens in a new tab) on January 16, 2018, and adopted an action plan in 2021. Read every message sign as you pass it, and slow down when one warns of trouble ahead.
