Driver's ed and DMV guide for Gilroy, CA

For families in Gilroy, Santa Clara County (population 62,193).

Teens in Gilroy take the same 30-hour online driver education course as everywhere in California, then the permit test at a DMV office. The nearest DMV field office is the Gilroy office at 6984 Automall Parkway Suite A, Gilroy, 1.0 to 3.3 miles in a straight line from Gilroy's public high schools.

Where do Gilroy teens take the permit and drive tests?

The Hollister office is open only part of the week, so check the days before you go. None of California's 162 permit-testing DMV offices lists weekend hours, so plan a school-day visit. Book an appointment on the DMV appointments page (opens in a new tab), and arrive well before 4:30 p.m.: knowledge tests are not given after that. What to bring is on our permit visit checklist.

Learning to drive in Gilroy: the US 101 and SR 25 interchange and Santa Teresa roundabouts

Just south of Gilroy, US 101 meets State Route 25 at an interchange that is being rebuilt. VTA says the old interchange (opens in a new tab) is over thirty years old. High speeds there bring above-average crash rates and backups onto southbound US 101. Phase 1, scheduled from spring 2025 to fall 2028, adds a four-lane SR 25 overcrossing and new ramp signals. In November 2025, Caltrans also closed lanes overnight (opens in a new tab) on southbound US 101 to replace concrete slabs. Slow down on the exit ramp itself, never on the freeway.

Inside town, Gilroy uses multi-lane roundabouts on Santa Teresa Boulevard. The city's roundabout guide (opens in a new tab) says to choose a lane before you enter. Use the right lane to turn right, and the left lane to go straight, turn left or make a U-turn. Every lane yields to cars already circling, even when turning right. Look left as you near the yield sign, enter on a safe gap, and signal before your exit.
