Learning to drive in San Diego: freeways, fog and the coast

San Diego adopted a goal in 2015 to end traffic deaths and serious injuries. The city reports that speeding was a contributing factor in 1 out of 6 crashes (opens in a new tab) from 2018 to 2022. It also builds quick-build safety projects from paint, flex-posts and barricades, so a street layout can change on a faster timeline. When a familiar street suddenly has new posts or striping, slow down and read the lane markings before you turn.

Interstate 805 runs 14.5 miles from the San Ysidro Port of Entry to SR-15 (opens in a new tab), through San Diego, Chula Vista and National City. Caltrans is rehabilitating it, with ramp and lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Weather near the ocean adds its own test. The National Weather Service says advection fog (opens in a new tab) is most common in the U.S. on the West Coast and can last for several days. Check closures before a night practice run, and use low beams when fog rolls in.
