Learning to drive in La Mesa: SR 94/125 interchange work and a calmer Lemon Avenue

The interchange of State Route 94 and State Route 125 lies partly in La Mesa. Caltrans plans a $275 million upgrade (opens in a new tab) in two phases. Phase 1 adds three auxiliary lanes, and Phase 2 adds a connector from southbound SR 125 to eastbound SR 94. Phase 1 construction was set to begin in fall 2026. An auxiliary lane links one on-ramp to the next off-ramp, so cars enter and exit in the same lane. In that lane, signal early and watch for drivers cutting across.

Lemon Avenue between Garfield and Wood has dealt with speeding and trucks. The city added truck route signs in October 2022 and new edge lines in fall 2023, its Lemon Avenue page (opens in a new tab) says. In summer 2024, the segment was named a safety corridor under AB 43. Police also placed a speed radar sign for eastbound drivers. A radar sign flashes your speed as you pass. Treat it as a check, and ease off the gas if you are over the limit.
