Learning to drive in Santee: busy Mission Gorge Road and planned SR 52 lanes

Santee's main streets carry heavy traffic every day. Mission Gorge Road carries up to 45,400 vehicles a day and Cuyamaca Street up to 39,000, the city's transportation page (opens in a new tab) says. Drivers can reach SR 52, SR 67 and SR 125 directly. The Santee Transit Center serves trolleys on the Copper Line. On busy streets, keep a three-second gap and watch for buses pulling out. Near the transit center, look for riders crossing.

Caltrans is studying changes to SR 52 (opens in a new tab) between Mission Gorge Road and I-15, including the Mast Boulevard interchange. Ideas include a westbound truck-climbing lane and reversible managed lanes in the median. Another would add a third lane each way between SR 125 and Mast Boulevard. Environmental studies should be done in early 2029. On hills, expect slow trucks in the right lane. Pass on the left, and move back only when you see the truck in your mirror.
