Learning to drive in El Cajon: I-8 connectors and a planned roundabout

In El Cajon, Interstate 8 meets State Route 67 at Magnolia Avenue. In May 2026, Caltrans scheduled closures of the westbound I-8 connectors (opens in a new tab) to SR 67 for guardrail repair and maintenance. Drivers were told to exit at West Main Street and turn around. If your ramp is closed, take the next exit and follow the detour. Never back up on a ramp or stop on the shoulder.

On surface streets, the city plans to replace the signal where El Cajon Boulevard meets Johnson Avenue with a roundabout (opens in a new tab). About 17,000 vehicles pass through daily, and the skewed angles there contribute to crashes. Signal poles at that corner were knocked down four times in two years. On West Main Street, the Green Street project (opens in a new tab) would cut eastbound lanes from two to one and add Class IV bike lanes. At an odd-angled crossing, slow down and turn your head farther to see cross traffic.
