Driving in San Francisco County: steep hills, cable cars and fog

San Francisco's hills shape almost every lesson, from hill starts to parking. City law requires drivers to curb their wheels (opens in a new tab) on any grade steeper than 3 percent. Facing downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb. Facing uphill, turn them away, ease back until a tire rests on the curb, and set the parking brake. The city's cable cars (opens in a new tab) still run on three lines, two from Powell and Market and one from California and Market. Practice hill parking on a calm block, and stop behind a cable car while riders get on or off.

Fog and freeway work are the other city lessons. The National Weather Service explains that summer coastal fog (opens in a new tab) rides onshore winds through the Golden Gate and on toward Oakland and Berkeley. On US 101, Caltrans is repaving the Bayshore Freeway at Hospital Curve (opens in a new tab). Caltrans schedules full weekend closures of the southbound lanes there, and of westbound I-80 between 5th and 15th streets, while the work goes on. Check closures before any freeway lesson, and in fog use low beams, never high beams, with extra following distance.
