Learning to drive in Saratoga: new school-zone limits and streets without sidewalks
Saratoga reset many of its school speed limits in 2026. To carry out the updated school-zone limits (opens in a new tab), the city put up 80 new speed signs. Some streets near schools are now 15 mph, such as Titus Avenue and parts of Glasgow Drive. Others, including stretches of Prospect Road, Fruitvale Avenue and Saratoga Avenue, are now 20 mph. The council adopted the change on January 21, 2026, under a state law from 2025. Watch for the new signs, and ease off the gas well before you reach a campus.
Many Saratoga streets were laid out for a rural town, without curbs, gutters or sidewalks. The city's crosswalk policy (opens in a new tab) says walkers and cars often share the roadway on these streets. It also admits there are gaps in the sidewalk and path network. So far the city has added 11 overhead lights at crosswalks, according to its walking and biking tips (opens in a new tab). Where there is no sidewalk, expect people walking toward you at the road edge. Give them a wide berth when the lane is clear.
