Learning to drive in Cupertino: the Wolfe Road interchange and protected bike lanes

In Cupertino, Wolfe Road crosses Interstate 280 at an interchange VTA is rebuilding. The I-280/Wolfe Road project (opens in a new tab) adds a new bridge, new ramps and better bike and walking routes. The Wolfe Road on-ramp to northbound I-280 was scheduled to close starting the night of September 17, 2026. That closure is expected to last about one year. Drivers headed that way use the existing loop on-ramp instead. On a loop ramp, hold the posted ramp speed through the curve, then build speed to match traffic before you merge.

Stevens Creek Boulevard now has bike lanes walled off by concrete. The city's Stevens Creek bikeway project (opens in a new tab) built a separated lane on both sides between Wolfe Road and De Anza Boulevard. Bicycle signals were added at Wolfe and at De Anza. By September 2026, the city called construction substantially complete. Before turning right across a protected lane, look back for riders beside the barrier. Turn only on your own green.
