Learning to drive in Sunnyvale: adaptive ramp meters and a pedestrian scramble

US 101 through Sunnyvale uses ramp meters that react to traffic. In 2025, Caltrans began an adaptive ramp metering system (opens in a new tab) between Sunnyvale and Brisbane. It sets metering rates based on conditions farther down the freeway, and the signals go dark from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. In February 2026, the state also funded SR 237 repairs (opens in a new tab) from El Camino Real to I-680, with better bike and walking routes. At a working meter, stop at the line. Go on green, one vehicle per light.

Sunnyvale streets have some unusual signals. At Homestead Road and Mary Avenue, a pedestrian scramble (opens in a new tab) stops every car so walkers can cross any way, even diagonally. The city also uses HAWK crossing beacons and two-stage bike turn boxes. Its Vision Zero Plan aims for a 50% cut in deaths and serious injuries by 2029. During a scramble, all vehicles must wait, including drivers who want to turn right. Hold your stop until the last walker clears.
