Learning to drive in Mountain View: El Camino bike lanes and the Castro rail crossing

Mountain View's main street is El Camino Real, also known as State Route 82, and it changed in 2025. Caltrans repaved SR 82 (opens in a new tab) from just south of SR 237 up to Sand Hill Road. The job added about 13.5 miles of bike lanes, three new pedestrian hybrid beacons and brighter crosswalks. A ribbon cutting on October 6, 2025, marked the finish. In January 2026, crews also closed two southbound lanes (opens in a new tab) on the El Camino bridge over SR 85 for deck repairs. Before every right turn on El Camino, check your mirror and blind spot for riders.

Downtown, the railroad is the bigger puzzle. The city's Castro Street crossing project (opens in a new tab) describes a crowded junction of Castro Street, Moffett Boulevard and Central Expressway. Railroad gates come down often there, and more than a thousand walkers and riders pass through each day. A full grade separation lacks funding, so the city plans an interim fix that closes the Castro rail crossing to cars. People on foot and on bikes would still cross at street level. In a car, keep off the tracks entirely, and wait at the stop line while the gates are down.
