Driving in Shasta County: Interstate 5 merges and Route 299 bridges

Interstate 5 runs straight through Redding, and its interchanges come close together. Caltrans says drivers there must merge and weave between back-to-back interchanges while trucks crowd the right lane. The Fix 5 Cascade Gateway project (opens in a new tab) will add auxiliary lanes and part-time truck-only lanes, with construction scheduled to begin in spring 2027. North of Redding, I-5 crosses Shasta Lake on the 80-year-old Pit River Bridge (opens in a new tab). Practice freeway merges here on a quiet weekend morning. Signal early, match the speed of traffic, and choose a gap that is not beside a big truck.

State Route 299 crosses Whiskeytown Lake on a bridge built in 1961. Caltrans schedules the Whiskey Creek Bridge replacement (opens in a new tab) to begin in fall 2026 and wrap up at the end of 2028. Expect waits of up to 15 minutes, with longer stops during blasting in fall 2026. Farther along Route 299, near Big Bend Road, Caltrans plans to connect two short truck climbing lanes (opens in a new tab) starting in spring 2027. On a climbing lane, keep right if you are the slow one. Pass only where the extra lane opens, never across a solid yellow line.
