Driving in Siskiyou County: deer, elk and a snowy U.S. 97 pass
U.S. 97 between Weed and the Oregon line runs through country where deer and elk cross the highway. Caltrans says the area near Grass Lake has the highest recorded rate of wildlife crashes in its district. More than 50 deer and 16 elk were killed there from 2015 to 2020. Caltrans is building a wildlife overcrossing with tall fencing (opens in a new tab) and expects construction to wrap up in fall 2026. At dawn and dusk, slow down and scan both shoulders. If one deer crosses, expect more to follow.
In winter, the park service warns that the U.S. 97 pass at Mount Hebron (opens in a new tab) is often snowy. It also notes that services are scarce in this corner of the state. Before a winter drive, fill the tank and pack chains, water and warm layers. If the car starts to skid, the weather service says to stay calm and ease off the gas (opens in a new tab). Then turn the wheel toward where you want to go. With anti-lock brakes, press steadily and do not pump.
