Teens in Soledad take the same 30-hour online driver education course as everywhere in California, then the permit test at a DMV office. The nearest DMV field office is the King City office at 101 E San Antonio Dr, King City, about 18 miles in a straight line from Soledad's public high schools.
Where do Soledad teens take the permit and drive tests?
The King City office and the Hollister office are open only part of the week, so check the days before you go. None of California's 162 permit-testing DMV offices lists weekend hours, so plan a school-day visit. Book an appointment on the DMV appointments page (opens in a new tab), and arrive well before 4:30 p.m.: knowledge tests are not given after that. What to bring is on our permit visit checklist.

Learning to drive in Soledad: US 101 ramp work and the one-lane road to Pinnacles
Soledad sits on US 101, and State Route 146 heads east from town. From late August into late September 2026, Caltrans scheduled a ramp preservation project (opens in a new tab) on US 101. In Soledad, it covered the Arroyo Seco Road and SR 146 ramps. Ramps were set to close at night, with delays of 10 to 15 minutes. The new surface is meant to restore skid resistance and keep moisture out. Night ramp closures can surprise you, so check the route before a late drive and follow the detour signs.
State Route 146 is the way from Soledad to the west entrance of Pinnacles National Park. The park's directions page (opens in a new tab) warns that Highway 146 narrows to a one-lane road on the way in. The drive from US 101 is about 14 miles. No road links the west and east entrances, and the shortest way around runs through King City. On a one-lane stretch, slow down, keep far right, and be ready to pull over to let an oncoming car pass.
