Driving in Tehama County: rural curves and small-town highways

State Route 36 runs a long way through Tehama County, and some of its curves are dangerous. About 26 miles west of Red Bluff, Caltrans is rebuilding the Horse Gulch Curve (opens in a new tab) to cut crashes. The work improves the curve's shape, banking and shoulders so drivers can see farther ahead. Construction was scheduled to start in spring 2026. On rural curves, slow down before you enter, not halfway through. Keep right, and be ready for an oncoming car that drifts toward the center.

Route 36 also passes through Mineral, where people on foot and bikes share shoulders only 0 to 4 feet wide. Caltrans is adding a paved path and a safer Route 172 junction (opens in a new tab), with work scheduled between May and September 2026. Caltrans scheduled 24-hour traffic control (opens in a new tab) for widening work on State Route 99 in Los Molinos, starting April 27, 2026. Delays were expected to stay under 15 minutes. In small towns, slow down as soon as the speed limit drops. Give walkers on the shoulder a wide gap.
