Learning to drive in Thousand Oaks: US 101 paving and coordinated signals

US 101 crosses Thousand Oaks, and Caltrans has a pavement preservation project (opens in a new tab) running from Westlake Village through Thousand Oaks to Camarillo. For August 2026, it scheduled overnight closures of up to three northbound lanes from Hampshire Road to Moorpark Road. On-ramps at Rancho Road, Borchard Road, Wendy Drive and Ventu Park Road were set to close too. The city says Caltrans manages 29 traffic signals in town, mostly at freeway ramps and overpasses. At a ramp signal, stop behind the limit line and check for walkers before turning right on red.

The city runs 136 traffic signals of its own (opens in a new tab). Signals on Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Moorpark Road are timed together for through traffic. A side-street wait can feel long. State law requires drivers to stop at a dark, powerless signal and go only when safe. Downtown, the city replaced two crosswalks on Thousand Oaks Boulevard with one mid-block crosswalk (opens in a new tab) that has flashing beacons. Treat a dark signal as an all-way stop, and stop for any flashing crosswalk with someone in it.
