Driving in Tuolumne County: truck turns on SR 49 and the Sonora Pass closure

In Tuolumne County, big trucks and cars share tight curves and corners on State Routes 49 and 108. At the SR 108/49 junction near Jamestown, the corner is too tight for large trucks turning between the two highways. Caltrans plans to widen it, with completion listed for summer 2027 (Jamestown project (opens in a new tab)). On SR 49 at Tuttletown, a short, sharp curve is too narrow for southbound trucks, which slows traffic. The Tuttletown widening (opens in a new tab) is not due until spring 2031. On curves, keep right in your lane and stop well back from the limit line.

Sonora Pass on SR 108 closes every winter. Caltrans' closure table (opens in a new tab) shows it shut from December 25, 2025 to April 30, 2026. The season before, it was closed from December 16 to May 15. Even when it is open, Caltrans warns that bridges and shaded curves can stay icy after other pavement dries. Practice slow, smooth braking and steering on mountain curves. Check road status before you leave, keep the gas tank full, and carry chains in cold months.
