Learning to drive in Carlsbad: roundabouts and streets built for slower speeds
Carlsbad is redesigning its streets to bring speeds down. The city says unsafe speed (opens in a new tab) causes more injury collisions there than any other factor. Its tools include narrower lanes, curb extensions, raised medians, traffic circles and speed tables on Tamarack Avenue. The city's first coastal roundabout is at State Street and Carlsbad Boulevard, at its northern border. Drive the speed the street design suggests, and slow down more wherever lanes get narrow.
The city's roundabout guide (opens in a new tab) reports that deaths fall by 90% where a roundabout replaces an older intersection design. Traffic yields instead of stopping, so more cars get through. Watch the signs and pavement markings as you approach. Enter only when the gap is big enough, travel counterclockwise, and do not stop or pass inside. If you miss your exit, go around once more rather than braking hard or backing up.
