Learning to drive in Oceanside: the I-5/SR 78 junction and Coast Highway
The meeting point of Interstate 5 and State Route 78 is a key junction for Oceanside drivers. In July 2026, Caltrans scheduled night closures of connectors there (opens in a new tab), including the northbound I-5 ramp to westbound SR 78/Vista Way. Detours sent drivers to the Las Flores Drive and Oceanside Boulevard exits to turn around. If your connector is closed, stay calm, follow the orange detour signs, and avoid any sudden lane change.
Along the coast, the city plans to remake Coast Highway from Surfrider Way to Oceanside Boulevard. The corridor design (opens in a new tab) calls for a road diet, mid-block crosswalks, roundabouts at select spots and space for bicycles. Construction funding still had to be identified. The city's latest round of road repairs (opens in a new tab), starting in August 2026, covers 74 lane miles and includes traffic-calming work. Where a road diet leaves one lane each way, be patient behind slower cars, and pass only where it is legal.
