Learning to drive in Encinitas: bike safety changes and a Z-crossing on El Camino Real
Encinitas declared a local emergency over bike and e-bike safety on June 28, 2023, as collisions rose. The city then made quick safety changes (opens in a new tab), including narrower travel lanes, new bike lanes and bike lane buffers. Painted cross-bike areas now mark Encinitas Boulevard at Balour Drive and at Via Cantebria. The work was mostly finished in September 2025. Narrower lanes put bikes closer to your car. Before each right turn, use your mirror and turn your head to scan the bike lane.
On El Camino Real, about 250 feet south of Via Molena, a Z-crossing (opens in a new tab) lets people cross in two stages. A pedestrian signal stops El Camino Real traffic when someone pushes the button. At busy times, walkers may wait in the median and finish on the next phase. Construction was substantially completed in March 2024. When this signal turns red, stop at the line even if the walker is still in the median. Wait for green before you go.
