Learning to drive in San Marcos: San Marcos Boulevard changes and passing cyclists
San Marcos has finished phase one of its safety and traffic flow work on San Marcos Boulevard. That stretch runs past San Marcos High School, from Rancho Santa Fe Road to Knights Realm. It was done before school started. The city is also resurfacing about 21 miles of streets this year with slurry seal, its road construction page (opens in a new tab) says. Near a high school, expect new drivers, walkers and bikes at once. Slow down and leave extra space.
Many people ride bikes and e-bikes in San Marcos. Since January 1, 2023, state law says to move over a full lane to pass a bike rider when you can. The city's Traffic Safety page (opens in a new tab) also asks drivers to slow down at intersections and always yield to people on foot. When you cannot change lanes, stay behind the rider until it is safe to pass. Then give them plenty of room.
