Learning to drive in Escondido: SR 78 closures and Grand Avenue traffic circles
State Route 78 meets Interstate 15 in Escondido, and Caltrans is repaving it. In March 2026, Caltrans scheduled full night closures of SR 78 (opens in a new tab) between I-15 and North Broadway. Detours used West Valley Parkway and West El Norte Parkway. The full project covers 17.7 miles from I-5 in Oceanside east to Broadway and Lincoln Parkway. When a freeway closes, detour streets fill up, so slow down and expect other drivers to hesitate.
Downtown, the Grand Avenue Vision Project (opens in a new tab) narrowed Grand Avenue to one lane each way and added diagonal parking and traffic circles. The city celebrated finishing Phase II (opens in a new tab) in June 2025. A third phase, still in design, would add a traffic circle at Maple Street. Backing out of a diagonal space takes care. Go slowly, look over both shoulders, and yield to cars and bikes passing behind you.
