Learning to drive in Livermore: an I-580 wall collapse and the SR 84 bridge in Sunol
Interstate 580 is Livermore's main road out of town, and storms have damaged it. In March 2023, Caltrans closed two eastbound lanes (opens in a new tab) east of North Flynn Road after a crack opened in the pavement. Wind and rain had caused a retaining wall to collapse there. A week later, Caltrans shifted the highway to the left (opens in a new tab) so all four lanes could reopen until a lasting fix. Lanes can shift with little warning after storms. Follow the new stripes, and grip the wheel firmly when strong gusts hit.
State Route 84 is the other way west, through Sunol and Niles Canyon. Caltrans is replacing the Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge (opens in a new tab) on that road, built in 1939, for a wider and safer crossing. Construction began in May 2026 and runs in three stages over three seasons. Overnight full closures between Main Street and Pleasanton-Sunol Road have sent drivers on detours. Before a night trip through the canyon, check whether the road is open. If it is closed, follow the posted detour.
The path to a license in Livermore
- Finish the online driver education course (30 hours, $49.95 with Traffic Tutors) and wait for the mailed DL 400C.
- At 15½, apply for the permit at the Pleasanton DMV office or any other, with the DL 400C and a parent's signature.
- Book the first behind-the-wheel lesson; the instructor validates the permit.
- Practice 50 hours with a licensed driver 25 or older, 10 at night, while finishing the 6 training hours.
- After 6 months with the permit and at 16 or older, take the drive test. Dates: age date tool.
