Driving in Marin County: bayshore flooding and a West Marin bridge

In southern Marin, water is the local hazard on US 101. Caltrans says the highway beside Richardson Bay and Marin City floods during winter storms and high tides (opens in a new tab). Sea-level rise should make that happen more often. The study area runs from Donahue Street to the Richardson Bay Bridge and includes a short piece of SR 1. The fix is still in early planning, with a draft environmental document scheduled for summer 2027. Before a stormy-day lesson, check road conditions, never drive into standing water, and slow down so your tires grip.

In West Marin, Highway 1 brings a different kind of lesson. Just south of Point Reyes Station, Caltrans is replacing the Lagunitas Creek Bridge (opens in a new tab), built in 1929 and short of seismic standards. One-way traffic control was targeted for August 2026, and a 21-day full closure is planned after Labor Day weekend in 2027. The job is projected to finish in summer 2028. The bridge also carries cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Pass bikes with at least three feet of space, and only where it is legal.
