Learning to drive in Petaluma: Lakeville Highway merges and new roundabout plans
Lakeville Highway, part of State Route 116, has a lane drop that tempts drivers to race. Caltrans noticed aggressive driving (opens in a new tab) there, with impatient drivers using the merging lane to pass slower trucks. To stop it, Caltrans narrowed eastbound traffic to one lane just past Frates Road. It also added chevrons, delineators, rumble strips and speed feedback signs. When lanes merge, take turns smoothly, and never speed up to beat another car to the gap.
Two Lakeville Highway intersections are being redesigned. At Pine View Way (opens in a new tab) in Petaluma, side-street drivers face a stop sign while highway traffic keeps going. Caltrans plans a roundabout or a signal there, with construction set for spring 2029 to spring 2030. South of town, a 180-foot roundabout (opens in a new tab) will replace the stop-controlled junction with Stage Gulch Road. It was scheduled to start in summer 2026 and finish by spring 2028. Before pulling onto a fast highway, wait for a gap you can use without rushing.
