Driving in Sonoma County: carpool lanes and river-road slides

In Sonoma County, the carpool lanes on US 101 got new hours in 2026. Caltrans says the Marin-Sonoma Narrows (opens in a new tab) work closed the last gap. HOV lanes now run 52 miles, one each way, from the Richardson Bay Bridge to Windsor. Since March 2, the lanes have been carpool-only from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays. Teach your teen to read the posted hours and diamond markings. Then signal, check mirrors and look over a shoulder before moving between lanes.

In western Sonoma County, State Route 116 runs beside the Russian River, and wet winters loosen its slopes. Caltrans's March 2026 Sonoma County update (opens in a new tab) counts three slides in about a year on the four miles between Guerneville and Monte Rio. Each repair brought one-way traffic control, and Caltrans estimated one fix would be done by September 2026. In Bodega Bay, Caltrans set a Highway 1 retaining wall (opens in a new tab) project to start in late April 2026. It fixes sinking pavement between Kent and Taylor streets and needs about three months of one-way control. On these roads, practice stopping at temporary signals, waiting your turn, and slowing early for curves in rain.
