Learning to drive in Santa Rosa: the new Hearn Avenue overcrossing and Highway 12
Santa Rosa's newest freeway landmark is the rebuilt Hearn Avenue overcrossing on US 101. Caltrans held a ribbon cutting for the Hearn Avenue project (opens in a new tab) on December 11, 2025. The old bridge had one lane each way, no shoulders and a narrow sidewalk. Cars used to back up on southbound 101 waiting to exit. The new bridge has two lanes each way, full shoulders, sidewalks and bike lanes. Drive it first at a quiet hour, and check the bike lane before every right turn.
State Route 12 also crosses Santa Rosa. In July 2023, Caltrans began repaving three miles of SR 12 (opens in a new tab) in Santa Rosa. The road there is asphalt up to Fulton Avenue and concrete slabs past it. A feasibility study (opens in a new tab) looked at the busy Fulton Road crossing and the Merced Avenue intersection next to it, which has no signal. At crossings without a light, wait for a gap you trust. Never pull out in front of fast highway traffic.
