Learning to drive in Rohnert Park: crossing US 101 and flashing yellow arrows

US 101 splits Rohnert Park into east and west halves. The city's crossing study (opens in a new tab) says the Rohnert Park Expressway underpass forces walkers and riders past freeway ramps and large intersections. In 2021, the council backed a bike and walking bridge at Copeland Creek, called the Butterfly Bridge. Until a bridge is built, people on foot and on bikes still share that underpass with ramp traffic. At the ramps, look for walkers and riders in the crosswalk before you turn.

At many Rohnert Park signals, left turns are now controlled by flashing yellow arrows. The city's traffic signal page (opens in a new tab) says this arrow means turn left only after yielding to oncoming cars, bikes and people. A solid yellow arrow means the light is about to turn red. The city says these signals can cut left-turn crashes by up to 20 percent. Caltrans runs the ramp signal at Commerce Boulevard North. With the yellow arrow flashing, wait for a safe gap in oncoming traffic, even if the driver behind you is impatient.
